Lake Oswego Real Estate Information

With a population of about 38,000 residents, the city of Lake Oswego is located primarily in Clackamas County, Oregon, just south of Portland. Parts of the city lie in Multnomah and Washington counties and the city itself surrounds the private 405-acre Oswego Lake.

The Clackamas Indians were the first people to settle and occupy the area around Lake Oswego. Before large numbers of settlers arrived in the region via the Oregon Trail, most of the area between the Willamette River and Tualatin River were home to the earliest of pioneer homesteads and farms. By the 19th century, more settlers began to arrive, encouraged by the Donation Land Claim Act of 1850, and later the Homestead Act. The town of Oswego was founded in 1847 by Albert Alonzo Durham, who named it after his New York birthplace. He was also the man who built the first saw mill on Sucker Creek (now known as Oswego Creek), effectively establishing it as the town’s first industry. Over time, other industries were established by companies such as the Oregon Iron Company, Oswego Iron Company, and Oregon Iron and Steel Company. By the end of the 1800’s, the railroad had reached Oswego by the Portland and Willamette Valley Railway, which linked Oswego to Portland.

Lake Oswego is served by the Lake Oswego School District, which serves approximately 7,000 students with a ration of 23 students per instructor. The two high schools in the city are Lake Oswego High School and Lakeridge High School. The city is also home to a number of beautiful parks and open spaces, as well as an amphitheater, swim park, water sports center located on the Willamette River, an adult community center, public golf course, indoor tennis center as well as seven outdoor tennis courts, and five picnic shelters. The private Oswego Lake Country Club and nearby equestrian riding club also offer other great recreational amenities to the city. The city also has its own public library, which ranks among the top 10 libraries serving similar population sizes in the nation.
