Greater Portland, OR Area Information

Known as the Portland-Vancouver, Oregon-Washington, Metropolitan Statistical Area, the region known as Greater Portland is an urban area in the US states of Oregon and Washington, centered around the city Portland, Oregon. Officially the counties that make up the area include Clackamas County, Columbia County, Multnomah County, Washington County, Yamhill County, Clark County, and Skamania County. The Greater Portland area is Oregon’s largest urban center, with a population of over 2.5 million residents. Some major cities in this region include Beaverton, Gresham, Hillsboro, and Vancouver.

With Portland being the center of the Greater Portland area, the city a world famous, international destination offering excellent dining, shopping, and entertainment opportunities. The city is known for its ideal land-use planning and investment in environmentally friendly developments that make Portland one of the most beautiful and green cities in the nation. Portland’s economy thrives on industries including real estate and manufacturing. Intel is the city’s largest employer, and companies such as Adidas, Columbia Sportswear, and Nike have their headquarters located in the area. Portland is home to a light rail system and a large number of microbreweries, microdistilleries, and coffee establishments. The city is also nicknamed “The City of Roses” due to its large number of rose gardens, with the International Rose Test Garden being one of the most famous. Portland was also declared 2007’s “Delicious Destination of the Year” by Food Network for the city’s growing restaurant scene featuring delectable cuisines from around the world, as well as one of the largest vegetarian-friendly dining scenes. The city is served by several transportation systems, including buses, light rail, or streetcar systems. TriMet and MAX are the two main bus and light rail systems in the city. Portland is also served by the Portland International Airport.
